The
Historical Significance of the
SOUTH RIDGEWOOD ELEMENTARY
SCHOOL BUILDING
On US 1
in Daytona Beach stands the 1916 brick structure known as SOUTH
RIDGEWOOD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.
It is recognizable to many who note its unique
construction and detailing in the gold toned Lake Helen Brick
used for many civic structures in the area during the 1920’s
Its many years of service to the community provide several
examples of historical significance.

Originally termed “South Ward School”, it was designed in 1916 by
the prominent Florida architectural firm of Mark and Scheftall,
designers of several religious and civic structures in northeast
Florida during the early to mid 20th century.
This project currently awaits final designation on the
National Register of Historic Places while several other structures
designed by Mark and Scheftall, including the very similar
Jacksonville Grammar School, have already received such recognition.
Sadly, the SOUTH RIDGEWOOD
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL’s counterpart, the North Ridgewood School
(originally the North Ward School, also built in 1916) was lost to
demolition in 1987 and its lot remains vacant.
SOUTH RIDGEWOOD ELEMENTARY
operated as a school from 1916-1983.
In 1952 it became the first elementary school in Volusia
County to include a library for its students’ use.
Its first librarian, Lois Chappelle, later became the
school’s last principal in 1966.
Her first library acquisition, titled “Heidi”, now resides
with the building’s current owners as a part of its rich history to
be displayed following renovations.
Lois
Chappelle also played a role in Daytona’s cultural history as acting
principal at SOUTH RIDGEWOOD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL during racial
integration of Volusia County Schools in the 1970’s.
She remained principal at the school until it closed in 1983.
The building later housed offices and administrative records
for the county’s school board.
